Using a Public Proxy Server

One issue we have when attempting to access the class server is that the class server is located inside of the EIU firewall.  That firewall prevents access to the necessary ports to any EIU IP address that is outside the firewall.  Currently, that would include the wireless access system and student housing.

As a workaround for accessing the class server, you can put the url of the server into a proxy server.  In that case, the proxy server will then access the server for you from a non-EIU IP address, which is permissible.  Once the connection is established in that manner, all traffic passing from you to the server (and vice-versa) will be routed through the proxy server.  Once you exit your browser, that connection will be terminated.

One safe public access proxy server that you can use is ProxyOne.  Just access the site, type the class server url ( http://mis4530.eiu-mis.org ) into the box, and you will be connected.

Note that it is not necessary to use a proxy server if you are off campus (non-EIU IP address) or on campus inside the firewall (offices, labs, etc.).
